From Conversation to Coordination: Inside The Diaspora Network Miami
The Room Is Taking Shape — Miami
On April 9, a curated group of founders, investors, and ecosystem leaders gathered at the Island SPACE Caribbean Museum in South Florida for the Diaspora Network Kick-Off — Miami.
This wasn’t just another event.
It was the beginning of something more intentional:
A coordinated effort to connect capital, capacity, and community across the Caribbean and its global diaspora.

Why This Room Matters
Too often, conversations about impact stay at the idea level.
But the reality—shared across the room that night—is this:
The challenge isn’t just capital.
It’s infrastructure.
As discussed throughout the program, many entrepreneurs—especially across the Caribbean—don’t lack ideas or talent.
They lack:
access to networks
systems to scale
and the infrastructure to build sustainably
That’s the gap the Diaspora Network, powered by the partnership between Venture Philanthropy Blueprint (VPB) and Entrepreneurs Across Borders (EAB), is designed to address.
From Conversation to Coordination
The evening opened with a call to support the Island SPACE Caribbean Museum, a cultural institution dedicated to preserving Caribbean history, identity, and representation.
But that message extended beyond the museum.
It set the tone for the night:
This is about building what doesn’t exist—together.
The System Behind the Movement
During opening remarks, VPB Founder Alain Leroy shared the origin of the platform:
After years of building ventures and working with founders, one pattern became clear:
Even when capital is available, most impact ventures fail due to lack of capacity—not lack of funding.
This insight led to the creation of Venture Philanthropy Blueprint (VPB)—a model focused on funding infrastructure, not just ideas.
Through its partnership with EAB, the goal is to scale this approach across the diaspora.
Bridging the Gap: Capital, Access, and Execution
The panel discussion—Capital Meets Purpose—brought this into focus.
Founders shared real-world experiences building across the Caribbean and the U.S., highlighting a consistent gap:
Access to capital can take months
Payment systems create friction
Infrastructure limitations slow growth
At the same time, they reframed the challenge as opportunity:
The Caribbean is a “gold mine” for those who can bridge knowledge, systems, and access from the diaspora.
What It Actually Takes to Build
Three themes emerged from the conversation:
1. Invest in People, Not Just Projects
Capital alone doesn’t create outcomes.
Real impact comes from backing founders and building around them.
2. Access Is More Valuable Than Advice
For many entrepreneurs, what matters most isn’t guidance—it’s:
introductions
systems
and pathways to execution
3. The Diaspora Is the Bridge
The diaspora holds something powerful:
access to capital
exposure to systems
and proximity to global markets
The opportunity is to connect that access back to the Caribbean—intentionally.
A Network Designed for Action
At its core, the Diaspora Network is built on a simple idea:
Make it easier for people to give back—not just with intention, but with action.
As shared during the event:
Many in the diaspora want to contribute—but lack a clear, structured way to do it.
This network is designed to remove that friction.
What Happens Next
This was just the starting point.
The vision is to build an ongoing series of convenings—across cities like Miami and New York—designed to:
connect the right people
activate real collaboration
and move from conversation to execution
